In the spirit of returning this blog to something approaching functional status, here are the things I did and thought noteworthy which over the years I put in a little list on the front page for lack of anything better to do with them. Said list also functions as a convenient "what's happened since I last updated this blog." In reverse-chronological order:
- I finally got around to writing up my review of the Amazon Kindle DX.
- A news article in the MIT News section of Technology Review about my quest to get MITSFS's microfilm and microfiche digitized. (MITSFS being the MIT Science Fiction Society, of which I was President and Skinner '06-'08.)
- Simple Linux T-shirts, because I found it inexplicably hard to find a nice, high-quality black T-shirt with Tux the Linux mascot on the front, so I fixed the problem myself. Also hoodies and fitted and not-black T-shirts.
- The markdown2mediawiki.pl script I wrote to convert the Markdown-formatted wiki dump files from the annoyingly-defunct hosted wiki site Stikipad into the
XML import format used by MediaWiki. (See the MediaWiki manual's page on Importing XML dumps for details on how to get the data into your MediaWiki instance.) - The motivator.pl GIMP plug-in I wrote to create (de)motivational posters. Install it with
gimptool-2.0 --install-bin motivator.pl. Requires the latest, unofficial Gimp2 Perl bindings and Gimp >2.0, of course. - Sample output from the motivator script (warning — large files!): Education (photo credit, poster licensed under Creative Commons by-sa-nc) and Planning (photo credit, poster also licensed under Creative Commons by-sa-nc).
Unfortunately, publishing this here means I now need to figure out what to do with the front page. Ah well.
